Rome, 6juin, 6heures du matin. Katherine Thorn, l'épouse d'un diplomate américain de renom, est victime d'une fausse couche. Son mari, l'ambassadeur Robert Thorn, ne peut se résigner à lui avouer la mort de son bébé. Sur les instances d'un religieux, il accepte d'adopter un nouveau-né dont la mère est morte peu de temps après l'accouchement, et de ne rien dire à son épouse.
